ENGINEERING & TECHNICAL

The iDVM multimeter works with your iPhone or Android device to provide the best data acquisition and logging solution.  Data can be emailed or uploaded for formatting and reporting.

Automotive

THE IDVM HAS PROVEN TO BE AN ESSENTIAL TOOL IN A MECHANIC’S TOOLBOX.

The Challenge

Making measurements with a traditional multimeter can be challenging under the hood.

The Solution

How many times are electrical measurements needed under the hood while you’re in the cabin of the car or truck? The wireless nature of the iDVM addresses this issue. Attach the iDVM to the ignition and climb back into the cabin to turn the engine over. The iDVM measures and logs the voltage and/or current draw as the engine turns over, and you can see the data right on your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device.

Voice feature lets you hear the measurements

Another big benefit is the voice feature of the iDVM. Do you ever find it difficult to find a place under the hood to prop up your multimeter? Wouldn’t it be better if you didn’t have to prop up your multimeter? You can let the iDVM dangle, and through your earbuds attached to your iOS or Android device in your pocket, you can hear the measurements as you make them. Now there’s no need to carefully place the multimeter.

These days much of the needed data in an automobile is automatically available through a computer-based diagnostic system. That’s fine for diagnostics, but try to find a pesky short or other intermittent electrical problem. This is where the audio capability of the iDVM really helps out. Probing various points on the car is easier if you don’t have to look at a meter that may be hanging below you – or above you.

ADD OTHER “GRIPPERS”

The standard probes provide an ability to add a host of other “grippers” as may be needed for connections under the hood, in the dash or under the chassis. Using standard 1000V CAT III probes means that other third-party extensions can be used with the iDVM.

Contractors

THE IDVM IS A PROFESSIONAL TOOL FOR SKILLED PROFESSIONALS.

The Challenge

“Let me know when the power comes on when I flip this switch.”

The solution

Electrical contractors and others in the building trades often need to know the result of an action that they take – like flipping a switch. The iDVM allows a contractor to attach the meter to a circuit under test, and from a distance – like at the electrical panel – turn the power on and off to see the effect. The iPhone will automatically log electrical measurements as they are being made, and will display the results. If your hands are occupied, the iDVM will speak the electrical measurement values instead.

The benefits of a wireless connection

The fact that the iDVM links to your iPhone, iPod Touch, iPad or Android device wirelessly means that data can be taken in a variety of locations in a building or on a job site, and all of it can be wirelessly transmitted back to your mobile device. From there, you can email the data, post the data to the cloud (such as Dropbox), or use the ad-hoc web server function to share your data with clients, customers, and colleagues. All of the intuitive features of the Apple and Android user interfaces are available just as you would expect. You can pan, scroll and pinch your data for better visualization. The data can be saved for future visualization as well.

Keep track of your data with geo-tagging

Location information is also very useful. With the integrated GPS capability of the iPhone and Android devices, acquired data can be geo-tagged. This way, when data is stored or submitted the data will have exact longitude and latitude coordinates where it was taken. This is extremely useful as various jobs are geographically diverse. It’s always difficult to keep track of data, so geo-tagging offers a unique method of tracking important data.

Engineering

THE IDVM MULTIMETER IS THE ANSWER TO YOUR DATA LOGGING AND DATA CAPTURE NEEDS IN THE DESIGN AND PRODUCTION PHASES.

The Challenge

Design engineers, electronic technicians, and even home hobbyists frequently need more than just a voltmeter. The project vary, but one thing is for sure: no one likes to be stuck trying to remember what test point voltages were on their prototype.

The Solution

The new iDVM is the answer to your data logging and data capture needs. The iDVM permits a user to record data in a variety of formats: graphical (PNG, PDF, HTML), as a SQLite database file, or as a CSV file for analysis in Excel or similar spreadsheet programs. After the data has been saved it can be sent via email, shared via an ad-hoc web server, or posted to Dropbox or other cloud services for further analysis or reporting. Due to the flexible nature of the data storage and the intuitive nature of iOS and Android devices, the data is always available and handy for quick access.

Although data capture and logging is important in the design phase, it can be as important or more in the production phase, as many systems require rigorous product documentation, and test data is often part of that. Technicians build a variety of sophisticated systems and each system requires that tests are made and data taken to ensure performance. The iDVM provides a simple way to save the data for future use. Previously we were forced to write the data down on a scratch pad at our bench, and then subsequently transfer it to our notebook or production traveler if we remember. The iDVM solves this problem. You simply capture the data and save it in one of several ways. Portability of data – problem solved.

The iDVM also solves another problem faced by many: the test points are over there and you need to adjust a component over here. Easy – connect up the iDVM to the test points, make your adjustments and watch the measurement change on your mobile device right next to you. The iDVM can be up to 30 yards away from your iOS or Android device, enabling use of the instrument at a distance.

A handheld multimeter is essential to any design engineer or technician, but wouldn’t it be great to have the additional capabilities of the iDVM?

Technicians

SERVICE AND REPAIR TECHNICIANS PERFORM A VITAL ROLE AND THE IDVM MULTIMETER PROVIDES A SET OF FEATURES THAT MAKE THEIR JOBS EASIER AND MORE EFFICIENT.

The Challenge

Clients and management frequently request written reports with data provided.

The Solution

The iDVM multimeter provides unique data acquisition and storage capabilities due to its integration with iOS and Android devices. A service technician can easily record voltage, current and/or resistance measurements on the mobile device. Using the integrated file sharing features of iOS and Android, the data can easily be emailed or uploaded for subsequent review and formatting, using either WiFi or the cellular network, whichever is available.

Location information is also very useful. With the integrated GPS capability of iOS and Android devices, acquired data can be geo-tagged. This way when the report is submitted, the data will have exact longitude and latitude coordinates where the data was taken. For example, a radio engineer working on a transmitter needs to record a variety of data for FCC compliance. The geo-tagging feature lets the engineer organize measurements and data by transmitter locations.

By selecting the “Details” button when viewing data files in the app, a map appears with the current location identified as a blue drop pin. Touch the pin and a text box asks if this should be the location for the project. If yes, the longitude and latitude are automatically placed in the details section of the data.

iDVM’s voice function lets you hear reading as they change

It is often difficult to hold a voltmeter and see the display at the same time. The iDVM has an integrated speech function that permits the user to listen to the readings as they change. This allows the user to keep their hands free for use with the business end of the meter. Using the radio engineer as an example, measurements frequently need to e made on the transmitter tower, where concentration is critical. The last thing that a radio engineer needs is something else to hold while thirty feet or more up on a tower. By deleting the voice read-out, the electrical measurements are “spoken” through the internal speaker or ear-buds of the device. The voice function is a great example of using the integrated features of the iOS or Android device to extend measurement capabilities.

Wireless feature lets you make measurements from a distance

The wireless feature of the iDVM is critically important to many applications where service and repair technicians need to make measurements at a distance from their meter. Using our radio engineer as an example again: it is typically more convenient for the engineer who is on the ground to make measurements using an iDVM voltmeter attached to the tower.  Otherwise, the engineer has to go back to the tower to see the effect of any adjustments made on the ground or elsewhere.
